2025-2026

Welcome to Penguins Class Home Page.

Penguins Class includes children from Years Two and Three and you can find information about our class below:

Our Learning

In English, we will continue to follow the Power of Reading scheme: the children will be reading and exploring a range of texts including fiction and non-fiction. We will be writing a variety of different genres including letters, descriptions, stories and non-chronological reports. We will also be spending time developing our handwriting using the Letter-Join scheme.

In Maths, both year groups will follow the White Rose Maths scheme to support and develop their Maths learning. They will both cover a number of topics, including place value, addition and subtractions, fractions, time, measurement and money.

Our Cornerstones topics this year will drive our wider curriculum learning. Our units will include Tribal Tales, Wriggle and Crawl, I am Warrior, Mighty Metals, Urban Pioneers and Scented Garden.

In PE, we are covering a number of curriculum areas over the course of the year including Hockey, Fitness, Gymnastics, Dodgeball, Dance, Volleyball, Basketball, Badminton, Orienteering, Rounders, Athletics and Cricket. Puffins will need to be wearing their PE kits on Mondays and Wednesdays. Please remember that jewellery must not be worn for PE – including watches and ear-rings, we ask that these are removed on PE days.

Home Learning

Home Learning will be set termly for children and their families to work through over a number of weeks. This will be in the form of our Bethersden Bingo challenge- how many can you complete across a term? These challenges will cover a number of curriculum topic areas and Penguins will have the opportunity to share their home learning with the rest of our class. Learners will be awarded one House Token for each challenge completed. Those who complete all nine, will receive a certificate.

For those on RWI, an eBook will be set by their RWI leader to match their phonic ability. These will be set on Thursdays. Each eBook will be accompanied by a quiz so that they can develop their comprehension skills. They will also have a RWI Book Bag Book, a physical book for them to bring home, matched to the phonics they are learning. These are changed every Monday and Thursday.

For those who have completed the RWI scheme, they will move onto our Accelerated Reader books and will take part in reading comprehension sessions.  The books they bring home are equally matched to their reading ability, as an initial quiz provides each child with a reading level. They will then get to choose a reading book within their book band levels.
